Introduction

The International Foundation Diploma for Higher Education offers specialist pathways designed to provide learners with the transferable skills, knowledge and competence required to gain an accessible route into Higher Education with the opportunity to progress to future higher educational courses or employment.

There are opportunities during the course to give learners practice in developing employability skills such as; Problem-solving skills: use critical thinking, Intrapersonal skills: communicating, working collaboratively, self-presentation and Interpersonal skills: self-management, self-monitoring and development.

 

Course Modules

You will study modules such as:

Academic English and Study Skills

This module is designed to help students develop academic competence and awareness of academic English and study skills in preparation for higher education studies.

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of the module/unit you will have acquired the responsibility and autonomy to:

a) Demonstrate organisation of ideas and arguments in a clear and logical manner

b) Ability to write English clearly and appropriately using an appropriate range of sentence structures and vocabulary

c) Use citation and referencing appropriately

d) Use the work of others in academic writing – summarising, paraphrasing and quoting

Foundation Mathematics

This module is designed to consolidate learners’ knowledge and competence of mathematics through topics in the areas of statistical methods and linear algebra. The mathematical techniques taught in this module will be necessary to build a wider set of mathematical skills across a broad range of disciplines.

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of the module/unit you will have acquired the responsibility and autonomy to:

a) Demonstrate an ability to carry out basic algebraic manipulation

b) Plot graphs and apply general rules and principles of graphical construction

c) Apply concept of probability to find solutions to a range of problems

The Business and Financial Environment

Every organisation cannot operate on its own in an isolated environment – this is affected directly or indirectly by other factors. This module exposes the students to these factors creating  the necessary awareness to the type of product, competition available, customers, type of ownership, financial documents to be prepared and interpreted – in actual fact gives the student a macro view of all the elements that may influence the performance and operation of each business operation.

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of the module/unit you will have acquired the responsibility and autonomy to:

a) Understand the range of different businesses: local, national, international, global, private, public, not-for-profit/voluntary; sectors of business activity: primary, secondary, tertiary

b) Evaluate the purposes and functions of different organisations, influence of stakeholders and how the business organise themselves through strategic planning and organisational structuring

c) Show the function and role of key stakeholders, owners, employees, suppliers, and customers

d) Demonstrate the purpose of accounting and the grouping of business income and expenditure

e) Demonstrate the role of recording transactions, activity monitoring and the management of business

Impact of Communication Technology and Digital Marketing on Business

Nowadays more than years ago communication technology has a vital and crucial role in business operations. Emails, networking, social networks, media, and ways of marketing have become a necessary requirement towards the efficient performance of a business. This module addresses these issues so the student is conscious of the impact that communication technology may have on the business and how digital marketing has changed the way businesses use technology for marketing.

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of the module/unit you will have acquired the responsibility and autonomy to:

a) Understand the types of information: verbal, written, onscreen, multi-media, and web based

b) Describe examples of how the internet is used by selected, contrasting businesses

c) Understand the key features of planning for the increased use of e-business at different levels

d) Demonstrate the role of internet marketing within a modern marketing context

e) Show different aspects of Marketing: business to business, business to consumer, consumer o consumer, mainly based on modern information and communication systems

 

Mode of Learning

This diploma is delivered with a flexible online and blended based method, through a variety of course materials, case studies, discussions, presentations, enquiry-based learning and problem-solving activities. We provide you with key reading and research activities, and you will make the most of our own teaching portal.

 

Method of Assessment

Assessment is carried out through home-based assignments, which means you will have plenty of time to dedicate to each criteria. By having small groups, you will have more time for discussions where you can share your experiences at your place of work.

Each successfully completed unit will be graded as a pass, merit or distinction. A pass is awarded for the achievement of all outcomes against the specified assessment criteria. Merit and distinction grades are awarded for higher-level achievement.

 

Entry Requirements

Students should be in possession of either of the following:

  • Secondary School Certificate, demonstrating a basic level of English to benefit from the course
    OR
  • Candidates with relevant work/vocational experience will be considered on an individual basis
    OR
  • A qualification equivalent to MQF/EQF Level 3

Academic Progression

Successful students can pursue HNC/HND programme or Level 4 Diploma in Business Management awrded by ATHE or can progress towards BSc (Hon) Business & Management awarded by the University of Derby to be studied at Domain Academy in Malta. Successful students can also enter for a full time employment.
